China lifts embargo on Brazilian chicken imports

The decision, published by China's General Administration of Customs, reopens the main poultry market for Brazil.

Beijing has announced the lifting of the embargo prohibiting imports of poultry products from Brazil, a restriction imposed in May 2025 following the detection of an outbreak of avian influenza on a Brazilian commercial farm.

The measure was officially communicated by the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (GACC) in a note dated 31 October and published on Friday 7 November 2025. According to the statement, the decision is based on the results of a health risk analysis carried out by the Chinese authorities, which concluded that the epidemiological conditions in Brazil are under control.

Brazil, the world's leading exporter of poultry meat, had been one of the countries most affected by the suspension. In 2024, China imported more than 560,000 tonnes of Brazilian chicken, accounting for around 10-11% of the sector's total exports. The temporary closure of the Chinese market caused significant losses and concern in the Brazilian poultry industry.

The Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) celebrated the resumption of trade, highlighting the role of technical and diplomatic dialogue between the two countries. The Brazilian government assured that the country maintains its status as free from highly pathogenic avian influenza, having complied with all international biosafety protocols required by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

With this decision, Brazilian chicken exports to the Chinese market can resume immediately, providing significant economic relief and a boost to the agro-industrial sector. Analysts predict that shipments will be fully restored before the end of the year, returning Brazil to its leading position in the supply of poultry protein to Asia.
